Powerful dystopian-fantasy | Review: The Alchemists of Loom by Elise Kova

9781619844414about-the-bookHer vengeance. His vision.

Ari lost everything she once loved when the Five Guilds’ resistance fell to the Dragon King. Now, she uses her unparalleled gift for clockwork machinery in tandem with notoriously unscrupulous morals to contribute to a thriving underground organ market. There isn’t a place on Loom that is secure from the engineer turned thief, and her magical talents are sold to the highest bidder as long as the job defies their Dragon oppressors.

Cvareh would do anything to see his sister usurp the Dragon King and sit on the throne. His family’s house has endured the shame of being the lowest rung in the Dragons’ society for far too long. The Alchemist Guild, down on Loom, may just hold the key to putting his kin in power, if Cvareh can get to them before the Dragon King’s assassins.

When Ari stumbles upon a wounded Cvareh, she sees an opportunity to slaughter an enemy and make a profit off his corpse. But the Dragon sees an opportunity to navigate Loom with the best person to get him where he wants to go.

He offers her the one thing Ari can’t refuse: A wish of her greatest desire, if she brings him to the Alchemists of Loom.

my-thoughtsThis is the first book by Elise Kova that I read. I admit that I fell in love at the first chapter. It’s just that type of book that I love: fantasy + action-packed! I couldn’t ask for more…

I love how unique the story is, how unique Kova’s writing is, and how magical it felt to me while I was reading it. I love the tone used in this novel. Everything is told in a detailed way (and I loved it) and the sequencing is really great… which leads me to the next thing that I love about this novel… plot twists and revelations! Secrets were revealed really well that they made me go “WAIT, WHAT?”. The way that one thing unfolds another thing is what got me feeling excited to know what will happen in the next chapter.

I also love the characters in this book, and how they were presented. They are all different, but their differences are understandable and it made the story more interesting because we get to know different persons with different personalities but have the same goals. I think the characters are the most important part of this story. Without the characters, there would be no one goal, and without that one goal, the plot wouldn’t have been that interesting.

Actually, what I’ve been really meaning to say since the first sentence is that: every thing, every element in this book are stitched and sewn so well that it eventually became a brilliant novel!

Now I have to suffer the pain of waiting for the second book, The Dragons of Nova, which will come out on July this year.

My Rating:

  • NOT BORING because
  • ACTION-PACKED!!!! and
